jeffAudio - The Music of Jeff Hentschel - CD Review: Beach Boys Greatest Hits Vol. 1: 20 Good Vibrations
CD Review: Beach Boys Greatest Hits Vol. 1: 20 Good Vibrations
Greatest Hits Vol. 120 Good Vibrations by Beach Boys
Genre: Rock, Surf
Released: November 10, 1999
Rating: 9.8/10

With their carefree attitude, the Beach Boys sing simple songs about Cars, Girls, and Surfing. Sure, you won't find the complex rhythms or melodies found in other music; but the music is catchy and speaks about everyday things and it's relatively easy to sing along.

Beach Boys 20 Good Vibrations is a great cd that showcases some of the band's more well known works such as "California Girls," "409," and "Wouldn't it Be Nice." All of the songs are light-hearted and joyful, always putting a positive spin on life.

The Beach Boys were a group that had many single hits. This album puts a large chunk of those hits into one place for you to enjoy. There is also a second volume called "20 More Good Vibrations" if you are wanting more.

CD Review: WOW 2007
WOW 2007WOW 2007 by Various Artists
Genre: Christian Rock, Gospel & Religious
Released: October 3, 2006
Rating: 6.77/10

Normally I'm not a big fan of compilations albums. I prefer to buy the original cds so I can have the artists complete original view of the work. However, sometimes a compilation album comes along that is worth the money. WOW 2007 is one of those albums.

Including artists such as Newsboys, Jars of Clay, Chris Tomlin, and Reliant K, the WOW series continually puts out uplifting Christian music. If you're looking for a collection of refreshing tunes and don't like any one particular group, WOW 2007 is a great addition to any library.

CD Review: Jean-Luc Ponty - Live at Chene Park
Live at Chene parkLive at Chene Park by Jean-Luc Ponty
Genre: Jazz Fusion
Released: Februrary 4, 1997
Rating: 9/10

Recently, I've been looking in to some of Ponty's live albums. I find the live versions of the pieces to be drastically different from the studio versions, especially in a genre such as jazz where improvisation is so important. Live at Chene Park is no different. With an exuberant audience, this energetic cd is not to miss.

The program starts off with an introduction and quickly goes into the fast paced "Infinite Pursuit" and continues through the highly energetic concert performing pieces from a variety of albums. Other notable tracks include "Between the Sea and Sky" and "After the Storm."

Even though the main artist is Jean-Luc Ponty, one of the great things about the JLP Band is that all of the players are amazing. Ponty's live cds really demonstrate this because he gives all of the members individual extended solos. This also extends many of the songs you may recognize from other albums to create new works.

Live at Chene park is a great album. Even if you already have some of the songs on this cd in a studio album, take a look at this album. You might find the pieces to be very different from the version you already have.

CD Review: Stanley Clarke - Journey to Love
Journey to LoveJourney to Love by Stanley Clarke
Genre: Jazz Fusion
Released: Oct 20, 1990 (1975)
Rating: 7.6/10

This is the first Stanley Clarke album I purchased. I was introduced to his amazing bass playing on the DVD Live at Montreux where he played along with Jean-Luc Ponty and Al DiMeola. Journey to Love is a nice fusion album that is fairly varied in its styles with hints of funk to more classic jazz.

The two-part "Song to John" (dedicated to John Coltrane) and the four-part "Concerto for Jazz/Rock Orchestra" are nice songs, although I prefer the live version at Montreux of Song to John. Alltogether, this album is a standard fusion album of the time with some excellent bass playing.

CD Review: Jean-Luc Ponty - Tchokola
TchokolaTchokola by Jean-Luc Ponty
Genre: Jazz Fusion
Released: May 21, 1991
Rating: 9/10

At first glance, an album based entirely around African rhythms might seem a far step away from most of what you might be used to in other Ponty albums. At this, you would be both right and wrong. Tchokola is a jovial album unlike any other Ponty album I've listened too, and yet it is still unmistakably by Ponty.

I was first introduced to this album by watching "Mouna Bowa" on Jean-Luc Ponty's In Concert DVD. I previewed some of the other tracks and decided to pick it up for a change in style. I don't know much about African music except they are known for their intricate rhythms. Ponty combines these amazing percussionists with Ponty's unique style of improvisation to create a scintillating cd almost an hour long.

All of the songs are very upbeat and put you in a good mood. Their carefree attitude seems to mesmerize you into being happy and leaving you at least tapping your foot incessantly if not full out dancing.

If you are looking for an easy going album to get you through the day, definitely check this one out. If you are looking for a representative Ponty album, I would recommend looking at Enigmatic Ocean or The Very Best of Ponty first.
